How swimming and running affect our hearts

Plenty of individuals waste a lot of time worrying about work and responsibilities, and they often forget about their health. Our bodies have been designed for an active lifestyle, but we need to take good care of our organs if we want to say healthy. Today, we are going to be talking about the importance of keeping your heart healthy and swimming vs running – the two most common exercises that people engage for this purpose.

Running is a high impact exercise with high cardiovascular intensity

When it comes to running, you need to know that it has a very high impact on the body. When we run, our feet are being repetitively impacted, and so are your knees, hips and core. The truth is that your entire body is receiving small shockwaves with every step you take while running. high-intensity is an excellent activity that is going to get your heart pumping fast. It’s important to note that this is not the most suitable way to get a good cardiovascular exercise for people who suffer from any kind of ailment or physical condition.

Swimming is a low impact, high cardiovascular intensity exercise

On the other hand, you have swimming, and it has proven to be the most beneficial of the two. Please note that we are not saying running is harmful, but it does involve a more aggressive set of motions. Swimming is more like floating with resistance bands wrapped around your arms and legs. It feels like you are in space, but it forces your entire body to become active and fight against water resistance. This answers an important question regarding swimming vs running.

Studies on swimming vs running and how they affect our hearts

There have been several studies conducted for the effects of swimming vs running and our hearts. People have concerns with the side effects of high impact exercises, and how they can hurt the body. The good news is that in swimming vs running both have very similar benefits on the heart.

It seems like running is a better option for people who have no injuries or physical conditions. The high impact and high-intensity workouts you get from running are second to none. The catch is that you need to be in top condition if you want no negative effects from running.

Swimming allows anyone to experience a high-intensity cardio exercise without any risk of injury. It’s important to note that you need to have a good heart to take up swimming. If you suffer from heart problems of any kind, you may want to talk to your doctor and see if swimming is ideal for you. Running would, of course, be out of the question.

A lot of people debate in regards to swimming vs running, but they are both beneficial without a doubt. The main difference between the two is that you get a much higher impact exercise when running. This means that the best way to approach this decision is to consult with your doctor.

Due to the recent events around the COVID-19, and the City of Toronto closing community and recreational centre, we are taking extra precautions to keep everyone safe.

 

We have made the decision to temporarily close as of March 16, 2020, until April 5, 2020, and our spring session will resume on Monday, April 6, 2020.

 

What does this mean for our students?

 

The winter session will finish on schedule, and all classes on March 15 will run as normal.

The spring session will run from April 6 until July 12, 2020.

For those who cannot extend their swimming classes for the two weeks in July, we will offer makeup classes within the session.

For those who do become ill and cannot attend our spring session, the spring session will be credited into their accounts, to be used for later sessions.
